The Dane County Farmers’ Market wraps around the entire Capitol Square on Saturday mornings — the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country, with 150-plus vendors selling everything from artisan cheese to fresh-baked bread. If your match falls on a Saturday, build your morning around this.

Walk the length of State Street from the Capitol to the UW campus, then plant yourself at the Memorial Union Terrace with a pitcher of Spotted Cow overlooking Lake Mendota. It’s the most iconic hangout in Madison and it costs almost nothing.

For an outdoor day trip, Devil’s Lake State Park is 45 minutes north — bluff-top hikes with stunning views of a glacial lake. One of the best state parks in the Midwest, full stop.

The One Thing

Grab a chair at the Memorial Union Terrace at golden hour. Cold beer, lake breeze, sailboats on Mendota, the hum of a college town that actually lives up to the hype. It’s free, it’s perfect, and it’s the thing you’ll remember most.

The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar stops at CPCC and Elizabeth/Hawthorne, both a short walk from the ground. Rideshare pickup/dropoff at the main entrance on Kings Drive. Don’t park in CPCC lots — you’ll get towed.

• Weather: Humid and warm March through October. Early season can dip into the 50s with rain; summer pushes into the low 90s. Dress light, bring sunscreen, keep a rain layer handy.

The Ivey’s Hotel is the splurge — a 42-room boutique gem in the former Ivey’s department store on North Tryon, with the kind of polish that makes Uptown feel like a real city. The Dunhill Hotel is Charlotte’s lone historic hotel, open since 1929, with character for days at a more moderate price. For budget-friendly, the Home2 Suites in Uptown is clean, simple, and close to everything that matters. Stay in or near Uptown and you’re a quick rideshare from the stadium and the best neighborhoods.

Eat & Drink

Alexander Michael’s is the one. A Fourth Ward neighborhood tavern that’s been pouring pints and plating comfort food since 1983. The regulars treat it like a living room. Don’t skip the shrimp and grits.

Haberdish in NoDa serves family-style Southern food in a space that feels like it was pulled from a mill village time capsule. Get the fried chicken and the sweet potato dumplings, order too much, and share everything.

Lang Van is Charlotte’s pho temple. A no-frills Vietnamese spot on Shamrock Drive with 11 varieties of beef pho that’s been earning devotion for decades. Cash-friendly, generous portions, zero pretense.

300 East on East Boulevard in Dilworth has been a neighborhood anchor since 1986 — farm-to-table before the term existed. This is your best sit-down dinner. The menu changes with the seasons and the shrimp and grits are legendary.

NoDa Brewing Company is the move for craft beer. Charlotte’s original craft brewery has a taproom and beer garden on West 32nd Street that’s made for lingering. Grab a Hop, Drop ‘N Roll IPA and settle in.

Resident Culture Brewing in Plaza Midwood rounds it out — artsy, great hazy IPAs, and live music on weekends. If you want to bar-hop, the rooftop at nearby Burial Beer Co. is worth the walk.

Things to Do

The U.S. National Whitewater Center is the crown jewel — 1,300 acres of trails, whitewater rafting, zip lines, and mountain biking on the world’s largest artificial whitewater river. Unlike anything in any other USL city, and worth half a day minimum.

Walk the NoDa Arts District for murals, galleries, and the kind of funky creative energy that makes a neighborhood feel alive. Camp North End — a former Ford factory turned food, art, and event space — is another only-in-Charlotte experience worth exploring on foot.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown is a must even if motorsports aren’t your thing. Interactive exhibits, great storytelling, and a window into Charlotte’s deep roots in racing culture.

The One Thing

Spend a morning at the Whitewater Center. Raft the rapids, hike a few miles of trail, then grab a beer at the on-site taproom overlooking the river. You’ll be talking about it long after you’ve forgotten the final score.

Chattanooga is one of the few cities in American lower-division soccer with two professional clubs — the Red Wolves and fan-owned Chattanooga FC, whose Chattahooligan supporters are among the most devoted in the country — and a genuine soccer culture to match. The Red Wolves play out of CHI Memorial Stadium in East Ridge, but the heartbeat of your weekend is the Southside, a walkable district stacked with breweries, Michelin-recognized restaurants, and the kind of energy that makes an eight-hour drive feel worth it before you’ve even found your seat.

• Nearest Airport: Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA), about 5 miles east of downtown.

• Driving from Fort Wayne FC Park: Approximately 540 miles via I-75 South, roughly 8 hours nonstop. Louisville or Lexington make natural pit stops if you want to break it up.

• Parking & Transit: On-site parking runs around $13 — pre-purchase recommended. Rideshare works from downtown but budget extra time on match nights. The stadium is about 15 minutes from the Southside.

• Weather: Humid and warm spring through fall. Highs in the 80s and 90s through summer with afternoon thunderstorms that roll off the mountains. Layers for early-season evening matches; sunscreen and water for everything else.

Where to Stay

The Dwell Hotel is the move if you want personality — 16 rooms in a 1909 building with mid-century design and Matilda Midnight, a craft cocktail bar on the ground floor worth a visit on its own. The Kinley Chattanooga Southside puts you in the middle of the action — a boutique hotel across from the Choo Choo with a local art gallery, an on-site restaurant called Company, and a front door that’s a short walk from the best food and drink in town. For something more storied, The Hotel Chalet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo lets you sleep in a converted historic train terminal. All three are boutique, well-located, and worth the stay.

Eat & Drink

Main Street Meats is the essential Chattanooga eat. Butcher shop and restaurant on the Southside with a MICHELIN Guide nod, over 300 whiskeys, and a burger made from hand-patted local beef that will ruin other burgers for you. Go for lunch, go for dinner — just go.

For the best dinner in town, Alleia serves handmade pasta in a warmly lit space that feels like it belongs in a bigger city — the pappardelle with braised veal is the move. The Rosecomb, in a 1920s cottage above downtown, earned its own Michelin recommendation with creative, Appalachian-inspired small plates and a strong cocktail program. Little Coyote, down in St. Elmo at the base of Lookout Mountain, holds Chattanooga’s only Michelin Bib Gourmand for its Texas-style smoked meats and house-pressed corn tortillas. The patio alone is worth the trip. This is a city punching way above its weight class on food.

The Southside is where the drinking happens, and it’s where you should be before the match. Chattanooga Brewing Company is the city’s oldest brewery — dating back to 1890 — with a beer garden on Chestnut Street that fills up on weekends. Oddstory Brewing on Central Avenue has fire pits, live music, and a rotating tap list that rewards repeat visits. Hutton & Smith is the IPA specialist — quieter, more low-key, the right spot for a postgame debrief.

Morning after, Aretha Frankensteins in North Chattanooga is non-negotiable. Punk-rock breakfast joint in a converted house with horror movie decor and pancakes so thick they need their own zip code. There will be a wait. It’s worth it.

Things to Do

Ride the Incline Railway up Lookout Mountain — the steepest passenger railway in the world, with a panoramic view of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River that earns every bit of the hype. (Note: the Incline closes for maintenance from late December through early March, so check ahead for early-season visits.) Back downtown, the Hunter Museum of American Art sits on a limestone bluff overlooking the river — the collection is strong, but the building itself and the views from the sculpture terrace are the real draw. Walk the Walnut Street Bridge afterward, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, connecting the North Shore to the riverfront. Rent a bike and ride the Riverwalk if you’ve got time — Chattanooga’s trail system along the Tennessee River is one of the best urban greenways in the South.

Spend your pregame afternoon on the Southside. Walk from Main Street Meats to Chattanooga Brewing Company to Oddstory, eating and drinking your way through the neighborhood. It’s the most concentrated stretch of good food and local beer in the city, and it’s the kind of afternoon that turns a road trip into a story. The match is the reason you came. The Southside is the reason you’ll come back.

• Stadium: Hinchliffe Stadium — 186 Maple St, Paterson, NJ 07522. Seats around 7,800. A restored National Historic Landmark that once hosted Negro League baseball, reopened in 2023 after a $110 million renovation. It sits on the edge of the Great Falls — the backdrop is unlike any other ground in American soccer.

• Nearest Airport: Newark Liberty International (EWR), about 20 miles south of the stadium.

• Driving from Fort Wayne FC Park: ~620 miles via I-80 E, roughly 10 hours nonstop.

• Parking & Transit: A 315-space parking garage is part of the stadium complex. Street parking is limited on matchday. NJ Transit buses serve downtown Paterson, and rideshare is reliable. From Manhattan, it’s about 25 miles — plan for bridge and tunnel traffic.

• Weather: March and April can still bite — bring layers. By May through September it’s humid and warm, with the occasional summer thunderstorm. October cools off nicely.

Where to Stay

The MC Hotel in Montclair, about 15 minutes south, is the best boutique option — rooftop bar, Manhattan skyline views, and a design-forward feel that punches above its weight. For a mid-range pick closer to the stadium, the Wyndham Garden Totowa sits right off I-80 and gets you to Hinchliffe in under 10 minutes. On a budget, the La Quinta by Wyndham Clifton is clean, no-nonsense, and close enough without overpaying.

Eat & Drink

Paterson’s food scene is built on immigration, and it’s the most underrated in the Northeast. Start on Main Street in South Paterson, where the Middle Eastern strip runs for blocks. Abu Rass is the anchor — shawarma, grilled meats, a big outdoor patio, and the kind of place where everything is fresh and nothing costs more than it should. If you only eat one meal in Paterson, eat it here.

For a proper sit-down dinner, Darna on Main Street is the more polished option — beautiful interior, excellent lamb, and a menu that goes deeper than the usual rotation. One of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in New Jersey.

Donde La Tía Helen on Fair Street is Paterson’s Peruvian gem — bright ceviche, generous lomo saltado, portions that border on absurd.

For breakfast, Taskin Bakery on Hazel Street is a 24/7 Turkish bakery with handmade simit, savory börek, and baklava that rivals anything in Istanbul. The interior is warm and decorated with Anatolian antiques. Get a Turkish tea and take your time.

Stosh’s in Fair Lawn, five minutes from Paterson, is a beloved craft beer dive with rotating taps, bar pies, and a pool table. Unpretentious and exactly right.

Things to Do

The Great Falls of the Passaic River is right next to the stadium — a genuine national park with the second-most-powerful waterfall east of the Mississippi, thundering 77 feet into a rocky gorge in the middle of a city. Free, walkable from the ground, and the kind of thing that makes first-time visitors stop and stare. Garret Mountain Reservation, a few minutes south, is 568 acres of wooded trails and overlooks with views stretching to the Manhattan skyline. For something culturally specific, walk Paterson’s immigrant neighborhoods — Turkish shops on Hazel Street, Peruvian bakeries on Market Street, Arabic grocers on Main. Few American cities pack this much of the world into these few square miles.

Worth the Detour: Manhattan is 25 miles east. You know what to do.

The One Thing

Walk from the stadium to the Great Falls overlook. Five minutes on foot. Stand there and watch a 77-foot waterfall crash through the middle of a city while you process the fact that you just watched the Cosmos play in a Negro League cathedral. Nothing else like it in this league.

• Stadium: Premier Sports Campus — 5895 Post Blvd, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34211. Seats around 3,000+. A soccer-specific stadium inside a massive 140-acre multi-sport campus about 20 minutes east of downtown Sarasota. Open-air, modern, and surrounded by more athletic fields than you can count.

• Tickets: Available at tickets.sarasotaparadise.us. Away Section is 401 & 402.

• Nearest Airport: Sarasota-Bradenton International (SRQ), about 15 miles west of the stadium.

• Driving from Fort Wayne FC Park: ~1,100 miles via I-75 S, roughly 17 hours nonstop. Atlanta is the natural overnight stop if you’re splitting it into two days.

• Parking & Transit: Free parking on-site with 40 acres of lot space — you won’t have trouble finding a spot. No public transit to speak of out here. Rideshare works, but most people drive.

• Weather: March through October is hot, humid, and punctuated by afternoon thunderstorms that blow through fast. Sunscreen is mandatory. A packable rain jacket earns its spot in the bag.

Where to Stay

The Sarasota Modern in the Rosemary Arts District is the best boutique option in town — 89 rooms, a rooftop pool, and walkable to downtown’s best restaurants and galleries. For a solid mid-range pick closer to the stadium, the Homewood Suites by Hilton Sarasota-Lakewood Ranch puts you minutes from Premier Sports Campus with free breakfast and suite-style rooms that work well for families. On a budget, the Hampton Inn Sarasota I-75 Bee Ridge sits right off the interstate and splits the difference between downtown and Lakewood Ranch without overpaying.

Eat & Drink

Owen’s Fish Camp on Burns Court is the one place you don’t leave Sarasota without eating. It’s a Southern seafood shack tucked under a banyan tree that Thomas Edison gave to the city, with live music in the backyard and a line out the door most nights. Put your name on the waitlist early and don’t overthink it — get the fried shrimp or whatever’s fresh off the Gulf.

For the best sit-down dinner, Indigenous on South Links Avenue is the call. James Beard-nominated chef Steve Phelps runs a hyper-local, responsibly sourced menu that changes with what’s available. It’s serious food in an unfussy room.

Calusa Brewing on McIntosh Road is the brewery to hit — a big taproom with 36 lines, a great in-house kitchen called PigFish, and rotating food trucks on the weekends. It’s the kind of place where you settle in for a few hours.

The morning after, Der Dutchman in the Pinecraft neighborhood is an experience as much as a meal. It’s an Amish-run restaurant and bakery in Sarasota’s small but thriving Amish-Mennonite community. The breakfast buffet is enormous, the cinnamon rolls are legendary, and the whole vibe is wonderfully unexpected for a Florida beach town.

Things to Do

Siesta Key Beach has sand so white and fine it feels like powdered sugar — consistently ranked among the best beaches in the country, and it earns it. Go early and stay through sunset. The Ringling Museum is Sarasota’s cultural crown jewel — a 66-acre complex with a world-class art collection, a circus museum, and Ca’ d’Zan, the Ringlings’ 36,000-square-foot Venetian Gothic mansion on the bay. Unlike anything else in Florida. For something active, Myakka River State Park is 37,000 acres of wetlands, prairies, and canopy walkways about 30 minutes east — rent a kayak or hike the trails and you’ll forget you’re near a city.

The One Thing

Get to Owen’s Fish Camp before the dinner rush, grab a drink at the bar, and wait for your table in the backyard under the banyan tree. Live music, fried seafood, cold beer, warm night air. It’s old Florida at its absolute best, and it’s the thing you’ll tell people about when you get home.

• Nearest Major Airport: Southwest Florida International (RSW), about 30 miles north in Fort Myers

• Driving from Fort Wayne FC Park: ~1,243 miles via I-75 S, roughly 19 hours nonstop. Atlanta is the natural halfway point if you’re splitting it into a two-day drive

• Parking & Transit: Free parking at the complex. Rideshare is your best bet from downtown Naples

• Weather: March through October means heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms that arrive like clockwork. Pack light fabrics, sunscreen, and a rain layer

Where to Stay

The Inn on Fifth is the move if you want to be in the middle of everything — a boutique hotel right on Fifth Avenue South with a rooftop pool, solid restaurants, and walkable access to the best dining in town. For something a touch more affordable but still charming, the Bellasera Hotel sits just off Fifth Avenue with spacious rooms, a heated pool, and a quieter feel. On a budget, the Hampton Inn Naples Central on US-41 won’t win any design awards, but it’s clean, well-located, and gets you to both the stadium and downtown without hassle.

Eat & Drink

The Dock at Crayton Cove has been feeding Naples since 1976 and it still feels like the soul of the city. Waterfront, casual, unfussy — order the grouper sandwich and a cold beer and watch the boats. This is the one place you don’t skip.

Riptide Brewing Company is technically in Bonita Springs, about 20 minutes north of downtown Naples, but it’s worth the short drive. The taproom at 28120 Hunters Ridge Blvd has a laid-back, dog-friendly patio, a rotating lineup of house-brewed beers, and — this is the real draw — a row of pinball machines that will eat your afternoon if you let them. Open late on weekends, with trivia nights during the week.

Postgame, Bar Tulia in the Fifth Avenue corridor keeps things lively with craft cocktails, a strong local beer list, and a scene that skews more fun than fancy. It shares DNA with Osteria Tulia next door, which is where you go if you want one of the best Italian meals in Southwest Florida — housemade pasta, house-cured salumi, and a wine list that rewards curiosity. Make a reservation.

The morning after, Cove Inn Coffee Shoppe is a family-run counter joint that’s been doing pancakes and eggs since 1980. No frills, no pretense, just a solid breakfast with locals who’ve been coming for decades.

Things to Do

You’d normally start at the Naples Pier — it’s the most iconic spot in town — but it’s currently closed for a full rebuild after Hurricane Ian and isn’t expected to reopen until 2027. In the meantime, head to Naples Beach at Lowdermilk Park instead. A thousand feet of white sand, volleyball courts, tiki huts, and the same ridiculous Gulf sunset that made the pier famous. Paid parking, free entry, and the kind of light at golden hour that makes you forget you came here for soccer.

Fifth Avenue South is where Naples comes alive at night. It’s the downtown strip — restaurants, galleries, sidewalk cocktails, and enough energy to keep a postgame group entertained well past midnight. Walk it after the match. Mercato, up in North Naples, is the other move — a 53-acre open-air district with independent restaurants, bars, a dine-in cinema at Silverspot, and a second Bar Tulia location. It skews younger and livelier than Fifth Avenue and stays open late on weekends.

PopStroke in Fort Myers, about 30 minutes north, is a Tiger Woods-designed putting complex with two 18-hole courses, a full restaurant and bar, and an ice cream parlor — it’s mini golf for people who actually like golf, and a no-brainer if you’re traveling with kids or a competitive friend group.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, about 30 minutes northeast, is a 13,000-acre Audubon preserve with a boardwalk through the largest remaining virgin bald cypress forest in North America. It’s quiet, ancient, and completely unlike anything else in Florida — worth the morning if you want something beyond the beach.

The One Thing

Get to The Dock at Crayton Cove an hour before you think you need to. Grab a seat on the water, order the grouper, and just sit there. Naples moves at its own speed, and Crayton Cove is where you feel it. It’s the most Old Florida thing left in a town that keeps building new Florida around it.
