The Match
Corpus Christi FC had the ball for most of the night, with 63% possession, but Fort Wayne Football Club made the better chances and put three of them away.
The first big chance came just past the half-hour mark. Kabiru Gafar won a loose ball on a poor clearance in the Corpus Christi six-yard box and found Ryan Becher, whose shot had goal written all over it until Sharks goalkeeper Mason McCready got a hand to it and pushed it wide. On the ensuing corner kick, Javier Armas played it short to Taig Healy, got it back and hit it from about 28 yards into the back of the net in the 33rd min. It was his first goal for the club, and it was a big one. Fort Wayne 1, Corpus Christi 0.
Four minutes later it was 2-0. A Bernd Schipmann goal kick turned into a counterattack, Gafar and Clarence Awoudor played a give-and-go against three defenders, and Gafar finished it off for his first goal since July.
Corpus Christi kept the ball for long stretches of this match and couldn’t turn it into much. Jack Thomas came on for Healy in the 71st min., and it didn’t take him long to make his mark. He won a free kick in the 78th and served it into the penalty area from just outside the 18-yard box, finding Tiago Dias on the head. That’s two set-piece headers against Corpus Christi this season for our captain, who also tied Reid Sproat’s club record of 68 appearances.
Corpus Christi substitute Emmanuel Johnson pulled one back from close range in the 83rd min., stealing the clean sheet from Schipmann. It was head coach Mike Avery’s 50th win in charge of the club. Fort Wayne 3, Corpus Christi 1.
The Defender’s Verdict
On a night that had playoff implications, Fort Wayne FC found a way to secure all three points, away, against a team looking to spoil our season. With the win, we’re now six points clear of Corpus Christi, who dropped to tenth in the standings. FC Naples now poses our next closest threat, five points back.
Big players love big moments, and this win proved we have big players. For a Fort Wayne FC side that prides itself on being team-first, it showed what that means in practice. Six different players, all with goal contributions, either a goal or an assist.
Goal #1: Armas to Healy to Armas
Goal #2: Gafar to Awoudor to Gafar
Goal #3: Thomas to Dias
This game didn’t need one hero. It had a team of them.
Teams planning against the threat of Ryan Becher in the box, or Taig Healy at the top of the box, now have to double-check their notes. Once you think you’ve figured out this Mike Avery team, they surprise you with a different point of attack. The last thing any USL League One club wants right now is a Fort Wayne FC side with a confident Javier Armas putting shots on target from distance and a chance creator like Kabiru Gafar scoring goals. Add a sneaky threat in Jack Thomas off the bench late in a match, and that’s a problem. Sure, put a big body or two on Becher, and while he’s occupying your center backs, you just left someone else open.
This is how our attack works now. Since Lilian Ricol was sold in August, the goals have had to come from more places, and Wednesday showed they can start anywhere on the field, even from a goal kick.
The defense did its job too. Corpus Christi created one real chance. We sat deep and cleared whatever came into the box, and we made our own chances count. The anchor of our backline, our captain Tiago Dias, now tied for the most matches played in club history and one goal off the club’s all-time scoring lead, has proved not only that he belongs in USL League One, but that he’s a reason you show up to Ruoff Mortgage Stadium. The making of our first club legend. This is the stretch of the season where team leadership matters.
Win two of our last three and we’re into the playoffs, no matter what anyone else does. Saturday we’re at Union Omaha, top of the league and unbeaten at home in league play all season, on the same day Naples and Corpus Christi play each other. Another weekend ahead of watching Fort Wayne football, and your phone. Every match matters now.
