The Match
Union Omaha came into Saturday unbeaten in 26 straight league matches at home. They hadn’t been shut out at home in USL League One play since July 2024.
The goal came in the 25th min. Clarence Awoudor played a one-two with Ryan Becher near halfway and carried the ball to the edge of the Omaha box. The ball ran a bit away from him, but Taig Healy arrived at the right time, at the top of the arc, hitting a clean left-foot shot with placement and power. It found the lower left corner, beating Omaha goalkeeper Cole Jensen. Fort Wayne 1 - Union Omaha 0. It was Healy’s 12th goal of the season, extending his own club record.
The first half was an even affair. Omaha had more of the ball, but Fort Wayne FC outshot the Owls 8 to 5 and put four shots on target to Omaha’s two. Omaha’s first-half expected goals edged Fort Wayne’s, 0.90 to 0.56, but more than half of their total came from a single chance, Union Omaha forward Pato Botello Faz’s missed rebound a minute before Healy scored.
After halftime, the match turned in the 70th min. A long ball out of the Omaha back line, flicked in behind our defense, caught Fort Wayne FC’s Aleksandar Vukovic on the wrong side of Botello Faz. Vukovic was forced into a decision to foul the Union Omaha forward near the half, and received a second yellow card, leaving Fort Wayne FC to play with 10 men for the rest of the match.
As expected, what followed was a siege. A home side not used to chasing a match, and in unfamiliar territory with zero goals scored. Omaha took 11 shots after the red card, and two of them came from inside 10 yards. They would end the match on 2.74 expected goals, controlling 71% of the possession, but failing to control the only stat that matters, the scoreline. Bernd Schipmann made five saves on the night, producing his 10th clean sheet of the season. With the win, Fort Wayne sits on 45 points, five clear of FC Naples, who are chasing to claim the 8th and final playoff spot. Two matches remain, both at home, first against Sarasota Paradise and then the final home match of the regular season against Athletic Club Boise.
The Defender’s Verdict
This was our most impressive win of the season.
The result sets up a “Win and You’re In” scenario for Fort Wayne FC, who now control their destiny heading into the final two home fixtures. Consider where we started. We arrived in Omaha on our third match in eight days, against a team with two weeks of rest that hadn’t lost a league match at home since July 2025. Union Omaha had scored in every home league match since August 2024. The only reliable way to beat the Owls has been to keep them off the scoreboard, and at home that has been close to impossible for two years. We did it with 10 men for nearly 30 minutes.
The Chattanooga Red Wolves were the last club to accomplish this feat, and they also went down to 10 men. There’s something frustrating when you can’t turn that advantage into an advantage, and it was obvious in how Union Omaha ended this match. Maybe a Starting X against Omaha is the psychological advantage their playoff opponent should deploy.
Coming into this match, Taig Healy had gone cold. Eight matches without a goal. Against Omaha, the model gave his winning shot about a 7% chance of going in, but it also credited him with a great strike: his post-shot expected goals, which rates a shot once it has been hit, came in at 0.57, meaning a shot placed like that goes in more often than not. He made it look routine. Four of his league goals this season have come from outside the box, and that’s no accident. Having him step up with the winner in a match like this matters for him and for the group, and we’ll need that big-game mentality over the next two weeks.
Results like this one change how a club sees itself. Back-to-back road wins on short rest, the second against the league leader and poster child of USL League One, prove we can beat anyone in this league, home or away. That kind of confidence builds a club, and it’s how a team starts staking its claim as one of the top organizations in USL League One. This wasn’t just a big win for Fort Wayne Football Club, it was a big win for this Midwest sports town.
Win and you’re in.
That’s the name of the game for these last two matches. Both at home, and both with their own unique storylines. The importance of the win against Union Omaha was that it puts fate directly into the hands (or feet) of this Fort Wayne side. Regardless of any other club’s results to finish this season, we only need to win one more match. For a first-year team that opened the season with five straight matches on the road, it feels like fate we get to close the season at home, where one more win can achieve yet another club milestone, our first professional playoff appearance.
Always FWD

Glad to hear of this important win for Fort Wayne!
