Fort Wayne FC controlled the ball and lost 4-2 to the New York Cosmos, undone by a three-goal collapse that spanned halftime. The Cosmos’ known attackers did exactly what we thought they would do, and we could not stop them.

The Match
The second-largest crowd in Ruoff Mortgage Stadium’s young history came out Saturday night for fireworks and watched the match explode on both sides of halftime. Cosmos winger Lamin Jawneh started it in the 44th min., collecting a pass from midfielder Shamit Shome while mixing up our defensive assignments. Jawneh found the matchup he wanted, beat his marker, and put a left footed blast past Bernd Schipmann from twenty yards. Cosmos 1-0. Three minutes later and into first half stoppage time, Fort Wayne Football Club conceded a corner kick. Ajmeer Spengler found center back Sergio Chavez unmarked at the back post after a missed punch attempt in the air by Schipmann. Cosmos 2-0 going into the half.
Two minutes into the second half the ball found the feet of Spengler, who shrugged off the first tackle, continued his dribble and with the outside of his left boot, threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into Sebastián Guenzatti’s stride. He settled the ball, beat Schipmann and almost beat Reid Sproat, who was in the right spot to clear the line. Sproat got twisted up on the clearance and helped the ball into the back of our net. Cosmos 3-0.
In the 66th min., Javier Armas found Ryan Becher on the corner kick, who headed in our first goal, but five minutes later Shome found Jawneh once again, splitting Tiago Dias and Michael Rempel with a through ball. Jawneh took the space with speed and finished with his right. Cosmos 4, Fort Wayne 1.
Becher drew a foul in the penalty box in the 91st min. during a frantic sequence where Jack Thomas hit the frame from 20 yards out. Clarence Awoudor stepped up for the penalty and calmly buried it, keeping the scoreline friendlier. Final score Cosmos 4, Fort Wayne 2. It did not change the story: Fort Wayne FC created plenty of chances but was ineffective when it mattered. The Cosmos were ruthless on the ones that did.
The Defender’s Verdict
It was the most goals the New York Cosmos have scored in a single match all season, and it came away, at Ruoff Mortgage Stadium. 4 goals against 2. The fans were anxious to leave early, but the promise of post-match fireworks kept them in their seats. It was the first time fireworks felt flat. A performance Fort Wayne FC will want to forget, and a reminder that good individuals in this league can beat good teams.
Disappointing is the right word for the night. Anytime a traveling team puts up four goals in your home venue, it’s going to be a long night. Giving up two goals right before the halftime whistle, and one more after the second half break will suck all the fun out of the stadium. Down 3-0 by the 48th min. felt unfair, but to the Cosmos, it felt clinical. We knew who their good individuals were. In this week’s Opposition Report II, it came down to three names on the attack: the Paterson Pelé, Ajmeer Spengler; forward Sebastián Guenzatti; and rising Cosmos talent on the wing, Lamin Jawneh.
Two goals from Jawneh. One goal from Guenzatti, which is now credited officially as an own goal by Reid Sproat. One official assist by Spengler, although he assisted on Guenzatti’s strike. That was the homework assignment. And we got taught a lesson.
It didn’t help that we chose this home match to rest some key starters. Starting #9 Ryan Becher was on the bench, alongside Clarence Awoudor and Jayden Smith who have recently been playing some of their best soccer in a Fort Wayne kit. It was a forgettable night for the entire backline. The subs that were eventually made did impact the match, which is what you want to see from your bench, but I’d be remiss to think those subs shouldn’t have been subs against this New York Cosmos team. The matches only get more difficult from here based on the current standings of the table.
We know Taig Healy can score. It’s his superpower this season. In these last two home matches, my observation is that he needs to play closer and underneath Ryan Becher. The pitch at Ruoff Mortgage Stadium is large, it plays big. And I think it favors speed at this level. We don’t have speed with Becher. Healy went off for two goals on a smaller pitch against Portland Hearts of Pine. My theory is that a smaller pitch forces Fort Wayne FC to play more compact, closer together. That creates the types of pockets Healy thrives in, closer to other players, near the top of the box. I believe we need to find a system that plays Healy closer to Ryan Becher. Ryan Becher’s superpower this season is creating space. These two players, combined, are the yin and yang to an electric League One attacking front two. The 3-5-2 would force Healy and Becher closer together, but if Mike Avery and staff want to stick to their current formation, it needs to adjust so both of them are playing within 10 yards of each other in the final third. Becher creating the space, and Healy arriving in that space to collect and shoot.
We have one week to put this bad loss to bed before we travel away to South Carolina. It’s a good reminder that any team in USL League One can win, individuals can take over games at this level, and studying your opponent is critical at the professional level. Pick your head up Fort Wayne, take these lessons and turn them into knowledge. No more sleeping in class.
