MD16 Recap & Analysis
The first Opposition Report made two concrete calls. Greenville fouled more than anyone in League One, so set pieces would be the shortest path to a goal, and their compact defensive block could be stretched if we kept the pitch wide and made them chase. The opener arrived off a set piece in the 16th min., Ryan Becher heading in Michael Rempel’s free kick, and the block never fully recovered its shape. Based on some of the advanced metrics of the match however, a 3-0 scoreline didn’t tell the whole story. By expected goals, the night was nearly a dead heat: about one goal of chances for each side, 0.99 to 0.93, and the edge belonged to Greenville. The difference was finishing.
Greenville’s newest faces are finding their form. Muba Nour was ten days into a short-term contract when he started at Ruoff Mortgage Stadium and subbed off an hour in without a mark on the match. He has been finding the net ever since. Six goals in the nine matches since our meeting, tied for the team lead. The roster has kept moving around him: a veteran back-line addition in Alex Villanueva, midfield depth in short-term signing Omar Ramadan, and Patrick Seagrist transferred to USL Championship side Lexington SC for an undisclosed fee. The team we scouted in July has evolved.
The Matchup II
Ignore the table for a moment. Since our July meeting, Greenville’s underlying numbers read like a playoff side. Across nine matches they have generated nearly 2 expected goals per game yet have only banked a 2-4-3 record (W-L-D) for their effort. This is a team playing with a bit of bad luck in attack and due a return to the median, though their defense is still susceptible. The name of the game is to score more than your opponent, so taking a front foot into Saturday is safer for Fort Wayne FC than sitting back and defending. Greenville’s Charlotte trip in August is the whole stretch in miniature: 3.2 expected goals created, zero scored, beaten by one goal. Muba Nour and Azaad Liadi now share the scoring load, and Liadi has missed a team-high 11 big chances, so I expect his goals to catch up with his opportunities.
The season-long identity is unmistakable: they tackle more than anyone in the league, foul at a top-three rate, and can live without the ball. Our July formula, patience and set pieces, remains the right lever. What has changed is the cost of a mistake. Saturday sends their reawakened attack into one of the league’s stingiest defenses; our 8 clean sheets lead all of League One, while Greenville leaks 1.7 goals per match at the other end.
On Wednesday, the club changed coaches. Dave Dixon is out effective immediately, and assistant Joel Tyson takes over as interim for the rest of the season. Tyson is no clipboard holder: seven years running Wofford’s program, a College Cup final on NC State’s staff last year, League One playoff experience at Charlotte Independence. Three days of prep will not rebuild a team, so I expect the shape we scouted to survive the weekend. The energy is another matter. Saturday brings our first look at GE Vernova Park, the permanent home Greenville opened this season, and a first match there under a new voice, with players auditioning for next season, is exactly the setting where an interim bounce lives. The front foot matters more now.
Before Monday’s roster freeze, Fort Wayne FC added forward Mamadi Jiana, 23, on loan from Houston Dynamo 2, reuniting him with his college teammate, captain Tiago Dias, and center back Aleksandar Vukovic, 25, on loan from USL Championship side Phoenix Rising. These are professionals looking for additional minutes, and they bring experience to this Fort Wayne squad. Both should excel in USL League One and be a boost to our playoff chances.
Saturday’s matchup is a storyline about our playoff push. It has been well documented that we have the youngest squad in the league. Greenville Triumph is loaded with seasoned veterans who have seen this part of the season before. They have the experience we’re still trying to acquire. We’re in it now. Can we find our second wind, on the backs of reinforcements, to walk away with points, or does Greenville’s squad get the better of us? Ignore the standings; we’ll be facing a quality team.
