Fort Wayne FC 0 – 2 Athletic Club Boise · USL League One 🏟 Ruoff Mortgage Stadium 📅 October 24, 2026 ⚽ Barea (39’), Amang (90+1’) 📋 FWFC Record (W-L-D): 12-11-9 · 45 pts · Matchday 32
The Match
Fort Wayne FC wanted a win, and nearly had a goal inside three minutes. Boise cleared an early set piece by Javier Armas and that ball found the feet of Armas once more, who served it again towards the back post. Tiago Dias got his head to it, and the header was blocked. Ryan Becher’s follow-up from close range went wide.
Fort Wayne, who dictated the tempo of much of the first half, lined up in its usual 4-2-3-1, with Armas and Emerson Nieto in front of the back four. Athletic Club Boise played its usual back three with its wingbacks pushed high. In the 39th min., Tiago Dias went to dribble out of trouble but left the ball exposed to Boise forward Jesús Barea, who poked the ball free. The ball found the feet of the trailing attacker Nick Moon, who played it back into Barea. After making his defender slip on the turf, Barea buried it past goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann to make it 1-0.
That scoreline held for most of the night. Coming out of the break, Fort Wayne FC still wanted a win, which would guarantee its playoff position, but that turned into a need to win by the 65th min. In the FC Naples match, Naples took a stoppage-time lead, which created a new must-win scenario for Fort Wayne for the last 30 minutes. In the 67th min., center back Aleksandar Vukovic was booked for his first yellow card, and in the 70th min. he picked up his second yellow and was sent off. Fort Wayne would be playing with ten men for the rest of the evening, still needing a win.
Fort Wayne FC pushed. Head coach Mike Avery unloaded the bench. In the 87th min., Becher couldn’t keep a header on target from a Taig Healy ball, which was one of Fort Wayne’s best chances all night, a spot in the 6-yard box where Becher typically finishes. The final dagger took place in the 91st min. With Fort Wayne FC left exposed while pushing for goals, Boise substitute Thomas Amang finished off a counterattack set up by Omar Yehya, ending Fort Wayne’s playoff hopes.
Fort Wayne FC finishes with 12 wins, 11 losses and 9 draws on 45 points, one point behind Naples in the 2026 USL League One standings. A 9th-place finish out of 17 clubs.
The Defender’s Verdict
A heartbreak of an ending.
It’s why we have a love/hate relationship with sports. One minute you’re unstoppable, and the next minute you’re humbled.
I feel for the players, and the coaching staff, who will take these lessons into the offseason.
The last two matches were within our control. Win and you’re in. Even two ties would have gotten the job done, but that’s not how it was meant to be. The soccer gods took off early for Florida this winter, and decided to sunbathe in Naples. In FC Naples’ final two matches, both must-win scenarios, they scored a winner on the literal last kick of their first must-win match, and for their second must-win match, scored a winner in the 94th min. Seconds determined Fort Wayne FC’s playoff fate from elsewhere in the league. The lesson is to control your controllables. If not, leaving it to chance is why we love and hate sports. It’s the first time since 2022 Fort Wayne Football Club will not be playing in the playoffs.
Our home winless streak will carry into 2027. Something we will want to cure at our first home match. That’s now six consecutive home matches without a win, dating to early September. We knew the final stretch was going to be tough. Arguably the toughest schedule remaining for any playoff hopeful team. We couldn’t close out our first season, on our terms.
The moment the 2026 USL League One Playoffs were in sight, it added meaning to the second half of the season. Every single match meant something, and that’s what you want. From my perspective, had we clinched a playoff position, we would have only played one more match this year. Fort Wayne FC was not built to win the league in 2026. And while we love playoffs because there’s a chance at hardware, we would have entered the playoffs as the least likely team to advance. We got one less game than we wanted. Heartbreak seemed inevitable.
AC Boise is heading to the USL Championship next season by invitation. This is a good club, both on and off the field. Had we kept a clean sheet heading into half, momentum would favor Fort Wayne for a second half at home. Boise’s opener came from Jesús Barea who has MLS experience on his resume at age 24. This is not a team you want to face in a must-win match. AC Boise has a good opportunity to lift the trophy. They ended their first and only season in USL League One at 3rd on the table out of 17 clubs.
It was a red card that felt like one of our legs was chopped off for the final 20 minutes of the match and our season. It was a near-identical second yellow for Aleksandar Vukovic who had a similar foul in our away match against Union Omaha. He was in a bad position, got turned, and his physical skillset worked against him when he drew a second foul, ending in a second yellow. That’s now 2 red cards in his 5 appearances. That’s not great. In his defense, these were high stakes matches, in a playoff hunt towards the end of the season. I don’t think he’s particularly a red card-type player from the eye test, but it will be his lasting memory in Fort Wayne assuming he returns from loan to USL Championship side Phoenix Rising this offseason. What it does highlight is that we’re thin at center back, and if your name isn’t Tiago Dias, there’s a good chance your place isn’t secure for Season Two.
Simply put, we couldn’t close out the season. And for 16 other USL League One clubs, they will be saying the same thing by the time December rolls around. Winning is not easy. And while Fort Wayne FC was 2 points shy of a final playoff position, it certainly won’t dampen spirits too long in this city. For a little while though, it’s okay to hurt, to feel the sting of defeat, it’s what makes us work harder. It’s what wakes us up the next day feeling like we got something to prove. Something to prove in this league. Something to prove, period. We’ll wear that chip on our shoulder this offseason and carry it into Ruoff Mortgage Stadium next season. This is Fort Wayne. We’ll get back up.
Always FWD
I plan to have a bookend to the Season One preview we ran at the start of the season. It’ll help to give the season a bit more context and meaning, an article less about a recap, and more about what worked, what didn’t, and some things to consider as we head into the offseason.
It’s been an absolute pleasure writing for you, and I hope along this Season One journey, you learned some new things, felt a little more informed before and after the match and found a voice that brought value in between these Fort Wayne FC matches. See you for the Season One review.

Too many fringe League 1 players on the roster this season but that should change next season with keeping 8-10 players from this season and back-filling with young talent. Losing Ricol hurt down the stretch but a great move by the club long-term. Looking FWD to season two!
